Before, During, and After: A Look at the Cosmetic Liposuction Surgery Process

Although liposuction is one of the most well-known cosmetic surgeries, the start-to-finish process is helpful to learn before booking a consultation and is important to understand before choosing to undergo the procedure.

A low-risk operation done to contour the body, liposuction removes stubborn, isolated fat buildups to change the way you look and feel.

So you can know more about the liposuction process, we’ve made quick explanations about what to expect before, during, and after the procedure!

Before Getting Liposuction

Before liposuction treatment, patients have fat deposits that won’t respond well to diet or exercise. Unfortunately, these buildups may make your body feel disproportionate and could hurt your self-esteem.

An important – and necessary – step before deciding to undergo the procedure is meeting with a surgeon and consultant at a cosmetic clinic. During the consult, you’ll work together to determine if the procedure is right for you. You can also expect to talk about the results you want to achieve.

You can get more time to decide whether or not to undergo liposuction surgery. The clinic will follow up with you, but feel free to get back in touch if you’re ready!

During the Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction begins by receiving general anesthesia to put you to sleep and stop you from feeling pain. Your surgeon will then make small incisions near the fat deposits you discussed during the consultation.

The common liposuction areas include:

  • Hips
  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Love handles
  • Spots around the chest

The surgeon will place a canula – a hollow tube that’s about the size of a pen – through the incision. This suctions out the fat, along with some bodily fluid. Don’t worry – the surgeon will monitor how much fat and fluid is taken, keeping you safe by not removing a harmful amount.

Your liposuction surgery will finish by closing the incisions. You’ll have scars. But they’re thin and hard to notice, since the surgeon likely made them in discreet areas.

After Getting Liposuction

When you wake up from the operation and can leave the cosmetic surgery clinic, your surgeon will give you some post-operation information. As well as guidance about when to return to work and resume daily activities, you might discuss how long any bruising and swelling will last.

You’ll also have to wear a compression garment. It keeps your body tight to reduce swelling and help the final results take shape. Patients typically wear it for six weeks. Once you take the compression garment off, you can see the results you’ve been waiting for! But keep in mind, there may still be swelling that needs a few more weeks to disappear.

It helps to have general understanding of the liposuction surgery process, from start to finish, before thinking about a consultation. If you decide to meet with a cosmetic surgeon and surgical consultant, make sure to ask questions to learn even more about how your body will look.
