Dr. Sleightholm Featured in Elevate’s January/February Issue

Have you checked out Elevate recently? Elevate is Canada’s authority on cosmetic enhancement, providing the latest news and tips about plastic surgery and anti-aging. The first issue of 2016 features insight from Dr. Sleightholm, the Director of Surgery at Brampton Cosmetic, alongside foot specialist Dr. Hartley Miltchin. The article, “Pay Attention to Details,” focuses on how to correct those subtle signs of aging we notice on our hands, arms, knees, and feet including wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of tone.

Dr. Sleightholm offers suggestions about:

  • Thick Ankles: Sometimes caused by cardinal, renal, or vascular disease, “cankles” can be an unsightly inconvenience. Dr. Sleightholm recommends considering liposuction, which can be used to reduce localized fat deposits and improve calf and ankle contours. Patients might also consider a calf augmentation, which would include an implant.
  • Sagging Arm Skin: Loose skin is often an unwelcome side effect of weight loss. For moderate cases, Dr. Sleighthom suggests a non-excisional, thermal-based procedure to stimulate the production of collagen. These treatments generally cause very little inflammation and heal quickly. To effect more drastic changes, an arm lift or reduction will deliver better results. With these procedures, patients should expect to see some scarring and have longer, more restrictive recovery periods.
  • Aging Hands: Hands are often a giveaway of age, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Chemical peels or pro-fractional laser therapies can lighten age spots and stimulate collagen production. Patients can also use fillers like Selphyl, which inject hyaluronic acid to restore volume and camouflage veins.
  • Sagging Knees: Surgical and non-surgical treatments can be used to treat knee-related issues. Light and heat therapies can even-out tone, encourage collagen production, and improve the overall quality of your skin. SAFE (Separation, Aspiration, Fate, Equalization) liposuction is a therapy used to shift fat into areas where it’s lacking. For patients looking for more drastic results, Dr. Sleightholm recommends excision to tighten the skin around the knee. An excision procedure will produce a scar, though it can be hidden in the skin’s natural creases.
