The 6 Questions You Need to Ask at Your Liposuction Consultation

Liposuction can be a life changing experience for many patients, letting them target those stubborn areas of isolated fat that good diet and exercise regimens haven’t been able to address. It’s important to be informed and prepared both for your consultation and for the procedure itself.

Keep reading to learn the six questions you need to ask during your liposuction consultation:

1. Which cosmetic surgeon will perform my liposuction procedure?

In the majority of cases the surgeon who you meet for your consultation will also perform your liposuction procedure, though it doesn’t hurt to ask the question and confirm.

After you know who will perform the procedure, you need to ensure your cosmetic surgeon possesses the necessary accreditations:

  • College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons
  • Canadian Society for Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Plastic Surgery).

You also need to assess what the cosmetic surgeon’s level of experience is with liposuction. How long have they been performing liposuction surgeries? How many procedures do they perform each year? Make sure you view before and after images, paying particular attention to patients with needs and body types similar to yours.

Finally, don’t forget to take into account how comfortable a cosmetic surgeon makes you feel during your consultation. Do they listen intently to you? Do they answer your questions caringly and patiently? You should ultimately walk away feeling confident in the clinic, the cosmetic surgeon, the supporting staff, and the outcomes you can expect to achieve.

2. Am I a suitable candidate for liposuction?

The most important thing to keep in mind is that liposuction is not a weight loss solution. To realize the best results, patients need to be close to their ideal weight but looking to get rid of excess fat deposits in cosmetically important areas like their:

  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Hips
  • Thighs

Speaking openly and honestly with your cosmetic surgeon will make it easier for them to assess your needs and provide individualized, relevant guidance.

3. Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?

Liposuction can be (and often is) combined with other procedures to help patients realize dramatic results. One of the most common pairings is liposuction and a tummy tuck – with liposuction addressing excess fat and the tummy tuck removing loose skin.

4. How is liposuction performed?

First, your cosmetic surgeon will place you under general anaesthesia. They will then make small incisions close to the fat deposits they’re targeting before placing a canula (a small, hollow tube) into the incision to withdraw the fat via suction (being careful to extract the correct, safe amount). Finally, they will seal the incisions and wait for you to wake up as the anaesthetic wears off.

5. What is the recovery period like after liposuction?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, which means you’ll be able to go home the same day you have your surgery. Patients can typically expect to get back to their normal activities after roughly a week, though you’ll need to refrain from any strenuous activities (including certain exercises) for at least four to six 6 weeks.

Keep in mind that you will see some initial bruising and swelling, though that should subside within two to four weeks. Your cosmetic surgeon will request you wear a compression garment for six weeks to minimize inflammation and enhance results. You should expect to see scars, but they’re typically in discreet areas and thin, making them difficult to notice and will drastically improve over time.

If you have any specific questions or concerns, make sure you discuss them with your cosmetic surgeon.

6. How much will my liposuction cost?

Exact costs will vary between cosmetic surgeons, though reputable clinics will offer prices within an approximate 10% range of each other.

Remember, though, that your ultimate decision should not be based on the price. Cosmetic surgery is a life-changing decision, which is why you need to choose the cosmetic surgeon who will be able to deliver results you’ll love over the long term.

If you have concerns about costs, you might want to consider your financing options. Cosmetic surgery clinics will often partner with third-party financing companies to let you cover all (or part) of your cosmetic surgery.

Read our blog to learn more about financing your cosmetic surgery.

Understanding your options and being prepared to ask the right questions during your consultation will help prepare you for your liposuction procedure, leaving you satisfied with the results for years to come.
