What is a Male Breast Reduction?

As the name implies, male breast reduction surgery removes excess fat and tissue from a man’s chest.

Many men have enlarged chests that call for this procedure. The cause is not always known, but may be attributed to obesity and the use of some drugs, such as anabolic steroids.

Frequently Asked Questions about Male Breast Reductions

How is the reduction surgery done?

Dr. Sleightholm will determine the specific technique for your reduction procedure. It largely depends on your anatomy and desired results.

He will start by making tiny incisions. Then, he will insert a small, hollow tube through them. This is done to remove a certain amount of fat and tissue. In certain cases, skin will be removed.

Sometimes, Dr. Sleightholm will remove breast tissue through an incision around the lower half of the areola.

Will the procedure leave a scar?

Scars are small. They are either in the breast fold or around the areolas. Upon healing, scars are not noticeable.

Will a procedure hurt?

Patients receive breast reduction surgery while under general anesthesia. After the procedure, you may feel moderate pain. However, it is easily controlled with pain medication.

Are there male breast reduction risks?

There are certain risks associated with male breast reduction surgery. Thankfully, they are rare and you can contact Dr. Sleightholm with any concerns.

Procedure-related risks may include:

  • Fluid Collection:Apparent fluid collection in the patient’s chest is uncommon. However, should a large amount of fluid form, a quick drainage procedure may be needed.
  • Asymmetry:Typically, both sides of the chest are not perfectly symmetrical before the procedure. However, Dr. Sleightholm puts a great amount of care into making the sides as symmetrical as possible.
Will I have to take time off work or my daily routine?

Generally, you can resume normal activities in about a week. Bruising and swelling subsides in two weeks or so, but you must wear a compression garment that covers the treated areas for six weeks.

This garment helps reduce swelling, speeding the recovery period.
